Ramadan - An Observation

"Ramadan is the (month) in which the Quran was sent down, as a guide to mankind and a clear guidance and judgment (so that mankind will distinguish from right and wrong).." (Q 2:183)

The Holy month of Ramadan is upon us and everyone is fasting, but other than abstaining from food and drink, there is still much to do to preserve the sanctity of Ramadan. The sun is showing much energy and the textile industry has really reaped off it. One can see women in all types of objectionable poses and clothing, which might be accepted in our rather borrowed culture but certainly not in our pure religion.
During this Holy month, it wouldn't hurt to pull off such advertisements for a month, there are still 11 months left to the year. Though this does not certify anything, it gives a rather pious image of Ramadan.

The heat is up, tempers are high and the traffic is gridlocked. Great. Passing through the arterial road of Karachi, I see a crowd. I pass by quickly but one glimpse is enough. Two people are engaged in a heated argument and a dozen passersby have quickly gathered. Ideal entertainment for them. The drivers gridlocked in traffic don't even mind, the scene is interesting. Unfortunately, I have an appointment to catch and am running out of precious time. A mile ahead, I see another disruption. Déjà vu. An argument yet again. Are we distinguishing right and wrong? I don't think so. There's much pondering and soul searching to do. We are fortunate that many days are still left to Ramadan and we should make the most of them.

"Fasting is a shield with which a servant protects himself from the Fire." (Imam Ahmad, Saheeh)

The devils are chained and protection from sins is not that difficult. Let's try for a truly pious Ramadan.

The Messenger of Allah (saw) said, "When the month of Ramadan starts, the gates of the heaven are opened and the gates of Hell are closed and the devils are chained." (Imam Bukhari)

  1. Surprisingly i must say, sarcastic but not too sharp, highly informative with an elegant touch of humor, worth thinking about...

    1. Thank you Hasan. I deliberately wasn't too sarcastic, people get discouraged. Light sarcasm can shake and wake them I think :)

  2. "our rather borrowed culture" A very strong assertion.this. But a very true one. A thought-provoking article and I suggest you take this borrowed perception of our culture and write a separate article expressing your views on it. That'd be one I'd love to read.
