Me and my younger brother were talking to my dad about the
water shortage (we face one these days). The discussion eventually drifted off to
sea and the navy. This is what followed:
“I remember my submarine days. Life was so tough. We always
had to take turns at eating, sleeping and every other possible task. For 10
officers, there would be 5 beds, everything had to be shared. There was only a
small table on which only 2 people could eat together and we took turns eating.”
He was objecting at our reliance at luxury and emphasizing that life wasn’t a
bed of roses. “Dad, Navy only eats the taxpayer’s money. They don’t do a thing. Look at the army, they fight and all whereas we hardly see any action from the Navy”, my brother was really abrupt with his opinion and I knew what was about to come.

Nothing came. Maybe my dad’s blood pressure was normal today,
that’s why. But, he gave a really nice explanation this time. “Son, Navy’s the
backbone of the military. Do you know what will happen if oil tankers don’t
dock at our terminals during war? The jets, the tanks, they’d all be useless.
We’d just be sitting ducks for our enemies. During war times, it is we who
escort all types of cargo. Mostly all of the stuff coming in and out of our
country is by sea. What would happen if our waters aren’t safe for trade? Our
country would crumble, our forces would crumble, and so would we.”
He really made a point there.

Hi Syed,
ReplyDeleteWhat a great explanation your dad gave about the important role of Navy! It's simple, to the point, easy for a civilian like me to understand.
I like your honest, enjoyable storytelling. Keep up the good work!
Hi Di,
